What Jesus Really Meant in John 10:10
““The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” — John 10:10 (ESV)
Many believers live in a cycle of survival—pushing through the week, drained and discouraged, wondering if this is all there is. But Jesus didn’t die so we could live half-alive. He came so we could truly live. To thrive. To flourish. To experience life as God originally designed it—whole, vibrant, and filled with purpose.
The Truth About Abundant Life
When Jesus said He came to give us abundant life, He wasn’t talking about just material wealth or a stress-free existence. The Greek word used for "abundant" is perissos, which means “exceedingly, beyond measure, more than necessary.” It's about living a full-spectrum life—spiritually rich, emotionally whole, mentally sound, and purposefully led.
That kind of life is not just reserved for pastors or super-spiritual people. It’s the birthright of every child of God.
Surviving vs. Thriving
Let’s be real—many of us know what surviving feels like:
-
Running on fumes spiritually
-
Overwhelmed by daily demands
-
Working a job you hate just to pay bills
-
Feeling disconnected from purpose
-
Struggling with anxiety, guilt, or shame
Now contrast that with thriving:
-
Waking up with vision and peace
-
Building something that matters
-
Living with margin—emotionally, financially, spiritually
-
Cultivating joy, purpose, and kingdom impact
What’s Stealing Your Abundance?
Jesus warned us that the thief (Satan) comes to steal, kill, and destroy. And often, we allow him to do that subtly:
-
Fear: Keeps us stuck in the familiar
-
Distraction: Keeps us busy but unproductive
-
Comparison: Steals our contentment and identity
-
Sin cycles: Dull our sensitivity to God’s voice
But the good news is—you don’t have to stay there.
Your Move Toward Thriving
You were created for more. Thriving doesn’t mean perfect. It means aligned—with God, His Word, and His design for your life.
Here’s your next step:
-
Take inventory of what’s thriving and what’s just surviving in your life
-
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where you've settled
-
Commit to one practical shift this week—spiritually, relationally, or professionally
You weren’t saved to play small. You were called to live full.
